New Publications on 'Comfort Women Project'

A research team, jointly led by Professor Jeong Jin-seong of the Seoul National University Institute for Social Development and Policy Research and Seoul City, has been seeking ways to uncover and share historical data regarding comfort women.

Among their efforts is the digital archiving project. They have found the Allied Forces’ records about the Korean victims of Japanese sexual enslavement, which are currently being exhibited in the Digital Archives of the Seoul Metropolitan Archives along with commentaries.

In addition, The Allied Forces' Records on Japanese Military Sexual Slavery, a collection of historical sources made possible by the Seoul City Gender Equality and Family Policy Office and compiled by the research team, has been recently published.

The book, which consists of two volumes, is designed to allow the general public interested in the issue of Japan's wartime system of sexual enslavement to fully understand the various perspectives and information reflected in the Allied Forces' documents.

Each volume contains commentaries that explain the included sources as a whole as well as detailed explanations to help the reader understand each of the sources. Most of the documents of the Allied Forces that deal with the issue of Korean comfort women mention the individuals involved or comfort stations in one or two sentences or paragraphs.

Thus, this book, though it does include the full text documents, selectively provides translations of the relevant sentences and paragraphs. Some of the documents, which are useful in understanding the historical context of the time, have been fully translated.
